Hi everyone! Clement from Westcoast here.
I have been asked often by students to recommend dramas and movies to watch for English practice. Recently, there has been a new drama made and produced in Canada which has become popular among many, especially the Asian-Canadian community and more specifically, the Korean-Canadian community.
Kim’s Convenience is a comedy drama about a Korean-Canadian family that runs a convenience store in Toronto. The shows centers on linguistic and cultural differences, as well as the conflict that happens when children are raised in a Canadian society with Asian parents.
The comedy is clever and very well written, while still being easy to understand. The mild Korean accent from some of the characters will help develop your ability to listen to English spoken by different ways, while others will speak standard Canadian English which will help with general listening. The English is all conversational, and is exactly the type of English you will here in daily conversation. You will also get plenty of Canadian culture and in particular, Asian-Canadian culture.
Give this show a watch and get to know the Kim family!
