英語学習 Canadian Slang: Week 2

Hello everyone! Clement here again.

Today, we’re going to look at three more words that are known to be Canadian. Some of these are not always used in all parts of Canada, so the best place to learn vocabulary is still from those around you!

1: Runners

In Canada, runners refer to the type of casual shoes worn every day, or for exercise. In other parts of the world, also occasionally in Canada, these are known by other terms such as sneakers, tennis shoes, etc.

2: Parkade

This is a word used to refer to any parking structure that has multiple levels. In other countries it is known as a parking garage, parking deck or car park.

3: hooped

When something is hooped, it is broken or messed up so badly that there is probably no chance of fixing it. Another Canadian equivalent is “borked”. Screwed, hopeless, and fubar are used in America, but Canadians know and use these words as well.

There are many more Canadian words, some of which are also used in other countries. These words are just some of the more unique ones which are only known to those people who are from or have lived for a long time in Canada. Try using them and see if you can impress your fellow students and teachers!
